At Het Steen, we will showcase a changing selection of our ‘Award Winning Designers’, designers who are making a difference for Antwerp.

ecoBirdy
EN: ecoBirdy redesigns discarded plastic into sustainable and ergonomic furniture. The brand offers aesthetically pleasing and functional designs for kids and grown-ups.
ecoBirdy was founded in 2018 in Antwerp by Vanessa Yuan and Joris Vanbriel who come from different cultural backgrounds. After gaining professional experience in diverse fields of the international fashion and design industry, they realized that they share a vision to create solutions for environmental problems using innovative technologies.
Their two-year study on materials resulted in a recycled and recyclable plastic material named ecothylene®. After the creation of this patented upcycling process, ecoBirdy was launched with its debut collection of children’s furniture made from discarded plastic toys. Shortly thereafter, it received multiple international awards for its innovative design and sustainable approach.
NL: ecoBirdy herontwerpt afgedankt plastic tot duurzaam en ergonomisch meubilair. Het merk biedt esthetische en functionele ontwerpen voor zowel kinderen als volwassenen.
ecoBirdy werd in 2018 in Antwerpen opgericht door Vanessa Yuan en Joris Vanbriel, die elk een andere culturele achtergrond hebben. Na professionele ervaring te hebben opgedaan in uiteenlopende domeinen van de internationale mode- en designindustrie, beseften zij dat ze een gedeelde visie hadden: oplossingen creëren voor milieuproblemen met behulp van innovatieve technologieën.
Hun tweejarige studie naar materialen resulteerde in een gerecycleerd en recycleerbaar kunststofmateriaal, ecothylene®. Na de ontwikkeling van dit gepatenteerde upcyclingproces werd ecoBirdy gelanceerd met een debuutcollectie kindermeubilair, gemaakt van afgedankte plastic speeltjes. Kort daarna ontving het merk meerdere internationale onderscheidingen voor zijn innovatieve design en duurzame aanpak.
Highlight: Charlie Chair & Louisa Table
EN: Designed by ecoBirdy’s co-founders Vanessa Yuan and Joris Vanbriel in 2017, these children’s furniture pieces are produced in Italy using a process patented by the designers that transforms recycled plastic into durable furniture, called ecothylene®. The designs combine an innovative production method with distinctive form-giving and an educational purpose: raising children’s awareness of sustainability. Winner of multiple international design awards and included in the permanent collections of, among others, the Young Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, and the Design Museum Brussels, they demonstrate how design brings together aesthetics and environmental awareness.

EN: WHERE FASHION MEETS EROS
NIGHTFALL is conceived, designed and art directed by Filip Arickx, half of the cult clothing label AF Vandevorst.
AF Vandevorst took a sensational start in 1998 with a first collection in Paris already including all the references that came to play a defining role in the brand : Joseph Beuys, the red cross, religion, horses and horse-riding accoutrements, rivets, lingerie, uniforms and fetish shoes. From then until the brand's final bow in 2020, it accrued a loyal fan base, interested in the fetish inherent in fashion.
NIGHTFALL is Filip's venture into a new expression of desire and the more tactile forms of eroticism. A debute collection of 4 signature sex toys, bringing his aesthetic vision and artistic sensitivity to the world of pleasure.
NL: WAAR MODE EN EROS SAMENKOMEN
NIGHTFALL wordt bedacht, ontworpen en artistiek geleid door Filip Arickx, de helft van het cultmodemerk AF Vandevorst.
AF Vandevorst maakte in 1998 een opvallend debuut in Parijs met een eerste collectie die meteen de signatuur vastlegde: referenties aan Joseph Beuys, het rode kruis, religie, paarden en ruiterattributen, studs, lingerie, uniformen en fetisjschoenen. Tot aan het laatste hoofdstuk in 2020 bouwde het merk een loyale achterban op, aangetrokken door de fetisj die in mode besloten ligt.
Met NIGHTFALL verkent Filip een nieuwe vorm van verlangen en een meer tastbare benadering van erotiek. De debuutcollectie bestaat uit vier karakteristieke sekstoys die zijn esthetische universum en artistieke gevoeligheid vertalen naar de wereld van plezier.

STOCK Antwerpen
EN: Stock Antwerpen has a clear mission: to create circular solutions for everyday needs. They start where things usually end; with residual products, discarded items and/or materials that unjustly end up as waste. The use of new raw materials is kept to an absolute minimum. Stock Antwerpen’s ambition is to work as much as possible with local suppliers and social employment partners (people with a distance to the labour market). In 2024, they launched their first product line: a 100% circular tableware collection, made in Antwerp.
NL: Stock Antwerpen heeft een duidelijke missie: circulaire oplossingen creëren voor alledaagse noden. Ze starten waar het meestal eindigt; bij reststromen, afgedankte spullen en/of materialen die onterecht op de afvalberg terechtkomen. Het gebruik van nieuwe grondstoffen wordt tot een minimum beperkt. De ambitie van Stock Antwerpen is om steeds zo maximaal mogelijk met lokale leveranciers en sociale arbeidskrachten (personen met afstand tot de arbeidsmarkt) te werken. In 2024 brachten ze een eerste productlijn op de markt: een 100% circulair en Antwerps servies.
Highlight: Tableware (re)invented in Antwerp
EN: Tableware (re)invented in Antwerp. This is how it works: In the warehouses of thrift stores, large quantities of worn, outdated or incomplete tableware sit unsold. Stock Antwerpen gets to work with exactly these items. At Stroom Maatwerk, the plates are stripped of their old glaze layer. What remains is the raw ceramic body, also known as “biscuit.” This is given a new glaze and fired at 1150°C. When the tableware comes out of the kiln, it is as good as new again. That’s how forgotten household items are given a second life. Perhaps on your dining table?
NL: Servies (her)uitgevonden in Antwerpen. Dat werkt zo: In de magazijnen van kringloopcentra staan grote hoeveelheden versleten, ouderwetse of onvolledige serviezen die niet verkocht raken. Met precies die serviezen gaat Stock Antwerpen aan de slag. Bij Stroom Maatwerk ontdoen ze de borden van hun oude glazuurlaag. Wat overblijft is de ruwe materie, ook wel ‘biscuit’ genoemd. Die krijgt een nieuwe laag glazuur en wordt gebakken op 1150°. Wanneer het servies uit de oven komt, is het weer zo goed als nieuw. Zo krijgt vergeten huisraad een tweede leven. Misschien wel op jouw eettafel?
Sumura
EN: Sumura is an Antwerp-based company focused on smart infrastructure for micromobility. In their ambition to help make cities more liveable, and as cycling takes on an increasingly prominent role, the need arose for a better way to charge and secure e-bikes at home.
The team behind Sumura combines smart design, software and hardware to create products that simplify everyday life. Everything starts from one question: how can modern mobility be logically and beautifully integrated in and around the home?
Sumura aims to ensure that the e-bike truly becomes part of daily mobility, and develops both software and hardware to make this possible.
What began as a practical problem at the front door is growing into a vision of how mobility and living can seamlessly come together; straight from Antwerp.
NL: Sumura is een Antwerps bedrijf die focust op slimme infrastructuur voor micromobiliteit. In hun zoektocht om van de stad een leefbaardere omgeving te maken en waar fietsen een steeds prominentere rol inneemt, ontstond de nood aan een betere manier om e-bikes thuis te laden en te beveiligen.
Het team achter Sumura combineert slim design, software en hardware om producten te maken die het dagelijkse leven eenvoudiger maken. Alles vertrekt vanuit één vraag: hoe kan moderne mobiliteit logisch en mooi geïntegreerd worden in en rond de woning?
Sumura wil ervoor zorgen dat de e-bike écht onderdeel kan worden van de dagelijkse mobiliteit en ontwikkelt software en hardware om dit mogelijk te maken.
Wat begon als een praktisch probleem aan de voordeur, groeit uit tot een visie op hoe mobiliteit en wonen naadloos in elkaar kunnen grijpen, recht uit Antwerpen.
Highlight: Sumura
EN: Sumura is a smart charging and locking solution for e-bikes that is mounted to the exterior wall of a home.
The device enables e-bikes to be charged easily, safely and neatly at home, without loose cables or improvised power outlets. At its core is smart technology that automatically manages the charging process and locks the bike while it is charging. The ART3-certified security chain provides a high level of theft protection and anchors the bike directly to the building. Through an intuitive app, users can control and monitor charging, with clear insight into status and usage.
The materials are selected for everyday outdoor use: robust, weather-resistant and durable, ensuring Sumura functions reliably at the home for many years.

NL: Sumura is een slimme laad- en vergrendeloplossing voor e-bikes die aan de gevel van een woning wordt bevestigd.
Het toestel maakt het mogelijk om e-bikes eenvoudig, veilig en netjes thuis op te laden, zonder losse kabels of geïmproviseerde stopcontacten.
In de kern zit slimme technologie die het laadproces automatisch regelt en de fiets vergrendelt tijdens het laden. De ART3-gecertificeerde veiligheidsketting biedt een hoog niveau van diefstalbeveiliging en verankert de fiets rechtstreeks aan de woning. Via een intuïtieve app kan de gebruiker het laden bedienen en opvolgen, met inzicht in status en gebruik.
De materialen zijn gekozen voor dagelijks buitengebruik: stevig, weerbestendig en duurzaam, zodat Sumura jarenlang probleemloos functioneert aan de woning.

In 2012, architect and product developer Michaël Kruijne founded the studio KRUM. The studio combines efficiency, sustainability and playfulness in both architectural and furniture design.
In recent years, he became interested in ceramics and designed his first objects with a focus on functionality and a tabula rasa mentality. Driven by experimentation, and with a unique blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques such as computer modelling and 3D printing, he started a collaboration with ceramicist Charlot de Bisschop.

In 2012 richtte architect en productontwikkelaar Michaël Kruijne de studio KRUM op. De studio combineert efficiëntie, duurzaamheid en speelsheid in zowel architectuur- als meubelontwerp.

Our designs stand out through architectural flow, abstract volumes and contemporary refined luxury with a timeless twist.Pairing up contrasts while welcoming outspoken lines, Lore Van Keer manages to harness surprise within elegance, quality within experimentation.Building on the DNA of traditional jewellery, each piece is also a technically refined creation made from responsibly sourced 925 sterling silver or 18-carat gold and gemstones. A team of highly skilled goldsmiths manufactures every jewel with time-honoured techniques and clear-cut vision in our ateliers in Belgium.

Onze ontwerpen vallen op door hun architecturale lijnen, abstracte vormen en een moderne verfijning met een tijdloze uitstraling. Door sterke contrasten te combineren en strakke lijnen te benadrukken, brengt Lore Van Keer een verrassende mix van elegantie en experiment. Elk stuk is met zorg gemaakt, geïnspireerd door de traditie van juwelenvakmanschap, en vervaardigd uit verantwoord 925 sterling zilver of 18-karaats goud, vaak in combinatie met edelstenen. In ons Belgische atelier wordt elk juweel met de hand gemaakt door ervaren goudsmeden die traditionele technieken combineren met een duidelijke, hedendaagse visie.

Swörl specialises in visual communications: motion graphics and animations that dynamically present products or services. With these, organisations communicate on Insta, participate in a fair or launch an event. Swörl prefers to create sustainability stories for clients who are trying to make the world a better place. Like a company that runs boats on hydrogen or a platform that lowers the threshold to mental healthcare. All the research and accumulated knowledge about green and innovative technologies helps to tell the next innovative story.

Swörl is gespecialiseerd in visuele communicaties: motion graphics en animaties die producten of services dynamisch voorstellen. Daarmee communiceren organisaties op Insta, staan ze op een beurs of starten een event. Swörl maakt liefst verhalen over duurzaamheid voor klanten die de wereld beter proberen te maken. Zoals een bedrijf dat boten op waterstof laat varen of een platform dat de drempel naar mentale gezondheidszorg verlaagt. Alle research en opgebouwde kennis over groene en innovatieve technologieën helpt om het volgende vernieuwende verhaal te vertellen.

TYP is a co-production of De Winkelhaak, Max Voltar Keyboards, TypoBelgique and Voxdale. De Winkelhaak, an iconic hub for start-ups and scale-ups, initiated the project and brought various designers together.
Jo De Baerdemaeker of TypoBelgique, a renowned name in the world of typography, breathed new life into old Belgian typefaces. Tim Van Damme a.k.a. Max Voltar Keyboards designed the letter jewels. Voxdale, an innovative company specializing in bold product development (with deep roots in De Winkelhaak), handled the technical realization and affordability of the final product, without compromising on quality or sustainability. When you bring passionate designers together, sparks are bound to fly!

TYP is een coproductie van De Winkelhaak, Tim Van Damme van Max Voltar Keyboards, Jo De Baerdemaeker en Voxdale. De Winkelhaak, een iconisch verzamelgebouw voor start-ups en scale-ups, initieerde het project en bracht verschillende ontwerpers met elkaar in contact.
Jo De Baerdemaeker van TypoBelgique, een gevestigde naam in de wereld van typografie, blies nieuw leven in oude Belgische lettertypes. Tim Van Damme, bekend van Max Voltar Keyboards, ontwierp de letterjuwelen en Voxdale, een innovatief bedrijf gespecialiseerd in gedurfde productontwikkeling (en met diepe wortels in De Winkelhaak), zorgde voor de technische realisatie en betaalbaarheid van het eindproduct, zonder in te boeten op kwaliteit en duurzaamheid. Breng gepassioneerde ontwerpers samen en je krijgt vuurwerk!

Minze is an Antwerp-based digital health company that strives to be a global leader and innovator in urologic, pelvic health and (in)continence care. It is their mission to improve patients’ health and wellbeing when suffering from lower urinary tract symptoms by bringing innovative, accurate and easy-to-use medical products to the patients’ home.

Minze is een Antwerps digital health bedrijf dat medische producten voor in de thuisomgeving ontwikkelt voor de diagnostiek en opvolging van patiënten met urologische problemen. Minze biedt een holistisch systeem aan dat bestaat uit verschillende medische toestellen geconnecteerd aan een patiënt app en een interactief, cloud-based artsenportaal voor opvolging vanop afstand. Het is hun missie om de gezondheid en het welzijn van patiënten met klachten aan de lagere urinewegen te verbeteren door innovatieve, nauwkeurige en gebruiksvriendelijke medische producten bij de patiënt thuis te brengen.

Hungry to feed the dynamic between the four of us, we have been co-designing jewelry collections since 2013.
Time and time again, we are fascinated by the magic arising when four sets of kindred hands and souls give shape to one idea. Our jewelry is the fruit of our never-ending attempt to assemble the perfect jewelry box, satisfying every state of mind and look.
Just like our friendship is about connecting emotionally and creatively, we hope our timeless collectibles become tokens of togetherness in many different ways.

Studio Collect is een hecht juwelencollectief verbonden door eten, humor, zilver en goud. Gedreven door een diepe vriendschap en de behoefte om onze creatieve dynamiek te voeden, ontwerpen we sinds 2013 samen juwelen.
Telkens opnieuw raken we gefascineerd door de magie die ontstaat wanneer onze handen samen vorm geven aan één idee. Onze ontwerpen zijn een voortdurende zoektocht naar de perfecte juwelencollectie, die past bij elke stemming en stijl.
Net zoals onze vriendschap draait om emotionele en creatieve verbinding, zijn we er trots op dat met elke ring, armband, ketting of oorbel die door onze handen gaat, ons creatieve avontuur eindigt en jouw verhaal begint.

TOTALLY CIRCULAR. Tomorrow's sunglasses from yesterday's waste. Yuma Labs is an Antwerp-based design and production agency for circular eyewear. Embracing a rebellious spirit, they consider themselves a laboratory, creating iconic, recycled sunglasses that challenge conventional production methods. Yuma Labs' commitment to a circular approach involves traceable materials, rigorous production control, and a continuous upcycling loop, allowing for innovation and adaptation to trends. They aim for co-creation with clients, encouraging sustainable choices and inspiring circular economy thinking. Ultimately, Yuma Labs seeks to make a positive impact on the environment and promote a circular economy for the global eyewear industry.

TOTALLY CIRCULAR. De zonnebrillen van morgen, gemaakt van het afval van gisteren. Yuma Labs is een Antwerps ontwerp- en productiebureau voor circulaire brillen. Yuma Labs is een laboratorium met een rebelse geest voor iconische, gerecycleerde zonnebrillen die traditionele productiemethodes uitdaagt. Hun toewijding aan een circulaire benadering omvat traceerbare materialen, strenge productiecontroles en een gesloten upcycling loop, wat innovatie die meegaat met actuele trends mogelijk maakt. Yuma Labs streeft naar co-creatie met klanten, moedigt duurzame keuzes aan en inspireert tot denken in termen van een circulaire economie. Het uiteindelijke doel: een positieve impact uitoefenen op het milieu en circulaire economie bevorderen in de wereldwijde brillenindustrie.

SUPERDRUK is an ‘analog print factory’, honouring, enjoying and educating the basics and history of printing techniques. They are mostly focussed on relief printing, with their collection of wood and lead type, and even the ability to lasercut, cnc or 3D print their own shapes. They try to put their beautiful analog machines to best use in a digital driven world, to combine both worlds into inspiring and exciting print projects.

SUPERDRUK is een 'analoge print faktorij’ die ambachtelijke druktechnieken in leven houdt, ermee inspireert en creëert. In het grafisch atelier ligt de focus op hoogdruk, met onder andere een grote collectie houten en loden letters. Met behulp van lasercutting, CNC frezen of 3D printen, kunnen zelfs eigen vormen gecreëerd worden. Ze proberen hun prachtige analoge machines op creatieve wijze in te zetten in een steeds meer digitaal gedreven wereld, waardoor inspirerende print projecten ontstaan.

Nedda El-Asmar studied Jewelry Design and Goldsmithing at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and completed her education at the Royal College of Art in London. Openness, flexibility and crossovers are key concepts in her thinking and design process.
Nedda creates a world of seemingly simple forms, optimally refined or curiously baroque, a mix of classical elegance and a modern approach in a balanced, creative way. Craft and originality, tradition and innovation, functionality and aesthetics, and a passion for recasting traditional objects are central to Nedda's work.
Her designs have won several awards over the years.

Nedda El-Asmar studeerde Juweelontwerp en Edelsmeedkunst aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen en voltooide haar opleiding aan de Royal College of Art in Londen. Openheid, flexibiliteit en cross-over zijn sleutelbegrippen in haar denkwijze en ontwerpproces.
Nedda creëert een wereld van ogenschijnlijk eenvoudige vormen, optimaal verfijnd of merkwaardig barok, een mix van klassieke elegantie en een moderne aanpak op een gebalanceerde, creatieve manier. Ambacht en originaliteit, traditie en innovatie, functionaliteit en esthetiek, en een passie voor het hertalen van traditionele objecten staan centraal in Nedda’s werk.
Haar ontwerpen vielen meermaals in de prijzen.

Since 2015, Redopapers has been creating beautiful paper products from misprints, cutting waste and (banner) surpluses. They collect everything from printing companies and rework it into graphic products. Think calendars, notepads or diaries and notebooks. Waste paper is thus given a new life. An innovative and sustainable circular business model with which the duo hopes to inspire others.

Sinds 2015 creëert Redopapers prachtige papierwaren uit misprints, snijafval en (banner)overschotten. Ze halen dit op bij drukkerijen en herwerken het tot grafische producten. Denk aan kalenders, blocnotes of agenda’s en notitieboekjes. Papierafval krijgt zo een nieuw leven. Een innovatief en duurzaam circulair businessmodel waarmee het duo anderen hoopt te inspireren.

Unfold is an Antwerp-based design studio run by Claire Warnier and Dries Verbruggen. The duo has a strong multidisciplinary background in design, technology and art. Jo De Baerdemaeker (@typojo) is an independent Belgian type designer and researcher. He earned his master’s degree in type design and a PhD from the University of Reading. His interests include designing, researching, and writing about world script typefaces (particularly Tibetan, Lantsa (Rañjanā), Mongolian, and Javanese) and multilingual typography.
In 2012, he founded Studio Type in Antwerp, Belgium, and collaborates with international design studios and type foundries.
Jo frequently speaks at international conferences and curates exhibitions on type (design) and typography. He is a typeface and typography consultant for companies, conducts (inter)national workshops on type design, and organizes 'Type Walks' in Belgium.

Jo De Baerdemaeker (@typojo) is een onafhankelijke Belgische letterontwerper en onderzoeker. Hij behaalde zijn masters in letterontwerp en een PhD aan de universiteit van Reading.
